   1907 in Budapest
   poor family, which J.D. supported by working in a machine foundry when still a teenager.
   J.D. was the oldest of 12 children
   studied at the Budapest Academy of Arts, and six years later became a faculty member;
   J. D.: Edge of paradise: Collection of colour woodcuts ;
   occasionally botanical & mostly free artistic color woodcuts; mostly artsy & ornamental, non-scientific approach

   Employed during the Depression, he toured Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany by foot, supporting himself by working odd jobs and selling his sketches, and decided to become an artist.
