I. B. was active as engraver and lithographer; he taught drawing in Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1817 he opened one of the first lithography studios in Russia on Nevsky Prospekt; in 1820 he became master printer in lithography to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; he also wrote a textbook on drawing;
