It is possible that some or even many illustrations attributed to Jacques Christophe were made in fact by the illustrator -> Jean Charles (= Johann Carl) Werner (1798-1856) since both have the same initials JCW. Some information in this entry stems from Martin Schneider, according to whom JCW was blind in old age and was thus dependent on state support - the Archives Nationales have several letters & petitions of support for JCW, later also for the education of his youngest daughter. Christine Elisabeth Jackson in her Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World (1999) incorrectly refers to him as Jean-Charles Werner.
